Is There Really a God - Part I

Part 1

The very first verse of the bible declares, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." The bible doesn't try to prove that there is a God or give evidence of His existence, it simply states, in the beginning a historical fact. In this small verse, we know everything about where we came from and who to turn to for answers. But, is there evidence of God in the world we live in? We would say, without a doubt. In fact, Romans 1:20 tells us that His existence is so evident in creation that every man will be without excuse when they stand before Him. So let's begin to look at some of this evidence.

Obviously, there is evidence of intelligent design absolutely everywhere. For instance, why do you think that scientists become excited when they find stone tools together with bones in a cave? Scientists realize that the stone tools could not have formed all by themselves; they must have had a designer. Do you realize how much more complex you are than a stone hammer? Yet, they would have us believe that we came about by random chance natural processes.

Another example we could give to clarify our point could be Mt. Rushmore. No one believes that the presidents’ heads on the mountain came about by millions of years of erosion. No, this was obviously intelligent, talented men that spent quite a bit of time carving these faces into the side of the mountain. If this is so obvious, how can people believe that we are products of random chance? We are so much more complex than a face on a rock.

One of the most famous of these examples was popularized by William Paley. He gave us the example of the watch and the watchmaker. If you were walking down the street and happened upon a watch and picked it up to study it, would you ever consider that it came about without a designer? That over millions of years, gears and cogs slowly meshed together to one day keep perfect time? No, the watch demands a watchmaker; just as obvious as the home or building you are in right now didn't come about by an explosion in a brick factory. Intelligent men got together and laid out blueprints, which included planning the wiring and plumbing and many other things. Yet, we are so much more complex than a watch or a house.

It is obvious that design demands a designer. Our design is so great that in Psalm 139, the psalmist exclaims, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Yet today, many have bought into the man made philosophies of evolution. They believe that not only the plants and animals have evolved from nothing, but the very people who are making the watches, homes, faces in rock, etc. The very ones proving that design demands a designer are believed to be products of evolutionary processes and not the Creator God.

If you're looking for proof of God, it doesn't take long - if you are sincerely looking for truth. His design is everywhere and His heavens declare His glory. As we'll see over some of the next studies, many scientists bring their biases to the evidence and will not allow any room for a supernatural Creator, no matter what the evidence says. The bad news for these scientists is that Romans clearly tells us that they will be without excuse before Him and Philippians 2 tells us that whether you believe in Jesus or not, every knee will bow before Him, but if you're doing for the first time on the other side, it will be to your condemnation. We need to pray for these men and show them the shaky foundation on which they stand.
